Kidney-friendly finger foods for Super Bowl® XLI
Are you ready for some football? Super Bowl Sunday is a time to party with family and friends. Unless you are one of the lucky ones with a ticket to the big game, you will probably choose to party at home. If you don’t already have a game plan for your menu, here are some dialysis-friendly recipes that everyone can enjoy.
DaVita dietitian, Kathy, provides an array of pigskin-minded favorites. These high-protein, low-phosphorus, low-potassium and low-sodium recipes will score with all football fans.If you are a person with chronic kidney disease who is not on dialysis and need to limit your protein intake, choose several of these meatball or wing recipes along with some lower protein appetizers. Try Spicy Crunch and Munch Mix, Raw Veggies and Dip, Festive Pineapple Cheese Ball and Cranberry Dip with Fresh Fruit from the DaVita.com Recipe section.
Super Bowl XLI will be played at Dolphin Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. This is the ninth Super Bowl to be played in South Florida (three times at Dolphin Stadium and five times at the Orange Bowl) in the history of the game. In addition to the game and the commercials, entertainment planned for halftime includes six-time Grammy® Award Winner Prince. Pre-game will feature Cirque du Soleil and Miami-based artist Romero Britto. Grammy® Award Winner Louie Vega will supply an original musical score and will perform with his Elements of Life Orchestra featuring vocalist Anane while the Cirque du Soleil performs.
Pre-game, halftime and after-the-game munchies can be satisfied with any of these delicious recipes named just for the occasion. For a beverage, you may want to consider kidney-friendly favorites like 7UP®, ginger ale, Sprite® or Barq’s® root beer. Coffee and tea are also good choices. Avoid beer, however, as it is too high in phosphorus. Plus, remember to take your phosphorus binders when you eat.
Put on your favorite jersey, find that giant foam finger and call the gang over for a Super Bowl party with all the fixings.
