Cabbage Salad and Vegetable Pilaf by Nilima from California

For most people, a career means a job that pays their bills. But Nilima had a much deeper reason for becoming a DaVita dietitian. “I wanted to be able to help others in need,” she shares. “The dynamics of the renal field fascinated me and the thought of being able to provide a better quality of life for someone is unimaginable.”

Born in India, Nilimamoved to the U.S. when she was just 12-years old. She received her bachelor’s degree from California State University in Long Beach and went on to complete her graduate studies at Loma Linda University.

Today, Nilima tries to make a difference in patients’ lives through education and compassion. And while she enjoys collaborating with her DaVita teammates, Nilima also values her independence and the freedom to try innovative teaching methods. She explains one of her most effective “hands-on” exercises:  For fluid control, I put together a cart with .5 liter, 1 liter, 2 liter containers with fluid saline bags. I then have the patients carry them to see how much fluid they have around their heart and lungs.”

Since joining her DaVita center seven months ago, Nilima has become inspired by her patients. “I really enjoy their willingness to learn and appreciative nature,” she says. “And though the most challenging aspect of my job is helping patients get motivated and stay motivated, it’s very rewarding when they look better, feel better and have their overall health improve due to the changes they have made in their diet.”

Here’s a delicious way to improve your health. Try Nilima’s recipes for Cabbage Salad and Vegetable Pilaf—two scrumptious side dishes guaranteed to complement any entrée.
