Grilled Pineapple Chicken by Laura from Kansas

As an Oklahoma native, it seemed obvious that Laura would attend the University of Oklahoma to earn her bachelor’s degree, and the University of Central Oklahoma for her master’s degree. But of all the fields to choose from; why did Laura choose renal dietetics?

“I became a dietitian because my mother was into health food,” Laura recalls.  “Then I got into renal care because at my first hospital job, they leased space to a doctor with a three-chair dialysis unit. After a year, he opened a dialysis unit down the street.”

Since that time, Laura has built a successful career as a renal dietitian with DaVita. She worked at a DaVita center in Texas for seven-and-a-half years, and has been in her DaVita center in Kansas for the past year-and-a-half.

“The most challenging aspect of my job is patient compliance,” Laura shares. “And the most enjoyable part is getting to know my patients. Since I believe a positive attitude is the best way to improve patient health, I try to find some humor in life, encourage good eating habits and be available for problems they may encounter.”

Laura also believes that a strong team is important. In fact, she says, that is what makes her center so special.  “We all care very much about the patients and treat each one as if they could be a family member. We want the best for our patients and try hard to make them feel that they have the power and heart to take the best care of themselves.”
