Healthy Halloween Treats from Judy from Kansas

While growing up in a small town in upstate New York, Judy became fascinated with the relationship between food and health. Today, that interest has become a driving force to help others.

After receiving her bachelor’s degree at Cornell University, Judy went on to complete her internship and master’s degree at Vanderbilt University.

Fourteen years later, Judy’s experience as a dietitian has enabled her to change people’s lives. “I want to make a difference by helping them understand the importance of how their diet affects their life,” Judy says.  “And one of the most challenging aspects of the job is trying to help patients understand the importance of good phosphorus control.”

That challenge has been easier to meet since joining the DaVita team in 1995. Judy explains, “It’s a company that truly does what it says it will do and is genuinely concerned about patients.”

But genuine concern does not always guarantee a warm reception. Judy remembered how one of her patients was actually angry about the diet she was advised to follow.

“After about a year of establishing a relationship with her, my patient decided that maybe what I was telling her had some credibility,” Judy recalls.  “Since then she has become my biggest cheerleader and provides education to fellow patients whenever the opportunity arises. She has had perfect labs and attendance for the last six months.”

Helpful advice with impressive results, Judy continues that tradition with two delicious recipes this Halloween—proving that good nutrition doesn’t have to be scary.
