I'm malnourished as a result of a malabsorption problem as my overall health declined commensurate with my kidneys' decline. I've been told to eat lots of fat, sugar, calories and to snack between meals. I find myself in a Catch-22, being unable to comply with both (1) my dialysis diet restrictions, and (2) physician orders to take in excess calories.
![]() In addition to this issue, I've been unable to tolerate any of the phosphorus binders. Dairy products carry lots of protein, fat and calories, but I'm afraid to consume them. Can anybody help??? Can I somehow filter the DaVita recipes to pull up only NON-diabetic recipes?? Are there Dialysis cookbooks that do NOT worry about diabetes or heart disease concerns??? Again, I'm non-diabetic; furthermore,I have a healthy heart and cardiovascular system. However, I'm currently skin and bones and MUST find a way to get more calories on board . . . Many thanks to anybody who is addressing these same issues and can help . . . |

To hear the words, "Help I need to gain weight!" would only be a dream for some of us, but in your case (which might be my case in a few months) it's a real need. Sorry to hear that you're having the malabsorption problem. I, too, am non diabetic and finding recipes is challenging, and yet I'm thankful for the things I have found I can eat. I've been picking up new foods to love, such as green peppers, etc. Anything with "taste" is wonderful. I think what I would do is when I ate:
~meat--be sure that there is some fat in it. ~vegetables--add pure virgin olive oil ~cereals--add sugar ~breads--consume high calorie (safe and legal) The National Kidney foundation also has a great site--very educational and great with understanding foods. I don't know about you, but when I got on the kidney diet 10 weeks ago, I lost my taste for sweets. So, I do have to sort of force myself to partake. To someone who's diabetic, I'm sure those are not helpful words because diabetics have more foods to shun than we do. We have to keep our hearts healthy--as well as what we have left of our kidneys, but I dare say that we can't go killing off our hearts and bones. At least we kidney patients have a lot to be thankful for--we do have an out (dialysis and transplant) if our kidneys fail. Not everyone who has a disease can say that. What stage are you? If you are 3 or less, I'd suggest the whole milk, no more than a cup a day. Take care of yourself!
