Sweet and Spicy Tortilla Chips

Our DaVita renal dietitian, Terri from California, presents kidney-friendly Sweet and Spicy Tortilla Chips. Serve them as a homemade side dish, dessert or snack. The recipe yields eight servings that can be pre-made and stored in an airtight container for later.

Portions: 8     Serving size: 6 chips


    • 1/4 cup butter
    • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground chili powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
    • 6 flour tortillas, 6" size


    1. Preheat oven to 425° F.
    2. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray.
    3. Melt butter and mix with brown sugar and spices in a small bowl.
    4. Cut each tortilla into 8 wedges. Arrange wedges in a single layer on the baking sheet.
    5. With a pastry brush, coat tortillas with seasoning mixture.
    6. Bake for about 8 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm or cool.
    7. Store extra chips in an airtight container.

Helpful hints

    • Use kitchen shears to easily cut tortillas into wedges.
    • Corn tortilla may be substituted for flour tortilla for a lower sodium snack (48 mg). Be aware the phosphorus is higher (63 mg).

Sweet and Spicy Tortilla Chips



This recipe is so easy and is very tasty! The chips are sweet and spicy. We made this recipe for a neighbor who is receiving kidney dialysis. The chips are so good that we will make more for our family as well!
