Recipe submitted by DaVita renal dietitian Judy from Illinois.

Portions: 4     Serving size: One hamburger with cream cheese mixture

Ingredients

    • 1 pound hamburger meat
    • 4 eggs
    • 4 tablespoons cream cheese
    • 1 teaspoon basil
    • 1 teaspoon onion powder (or 1 tablespoon fresh onion)
    • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (or 1 garlic clove, minced)
    • 4 hamburger buns

Preparation

  1. Mix eggs and hamburger together.
  2. Separate meat into eight 2-ounce patties.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix cream cheese, basil, onion powder and garlic powder.
  4. Take about 1-1/2 tablespoons of the cream cheese mixture and place on top of a patty.
  5. Take another patty and place it on top, to sandwich the cream cheese between the two patties.
  6. Repeat this procedure with the remaining patties.
  7. Cook in a frying pan or on a grill to desired doneness.

Helpful hints

  • For a variation, combine all the ingredients together with cream cheese in the meat, make four 4-ounce patties and cook.
  • Recipe may be varied by rolling cream cheese in bread crumbs or panko crumbs.
  • Patties cook best in a frying pan, in their own juices.
  • Many herbs and flavorings work well to add flavor without sodium — try using horseradish, oregano or Italian seasoning.
  • Top burger with lettuce and onion on a bun or top with a small amount of ketchup or steak sauce without the bun.

I agree with Amy. We made this tonight and my daughter put all 4 eggs in with the hamburger and we ended up with meat soup! LOL So we added 1/4 cup of bread crumbs. These burgers turned out quite well. The entire family liked them - I think next time we will try to add the horseradish to the cream cheese. Yummy!!

The burgers were awesome!!! Although I don't see how you can get 4 eggs to go into 1 lb. of hamburger. I used 1 egg and it was very slimey and the meat wouldn't stay together!! Unless breadcrumbs are used, 4 eggs cannot be used!
