Easy Shepherd’s Pie

Easy Shepherd’s Pie combines everything yummy — mashed potatoes, savory ground beef and sweet veggies — all in one hot, delicious dish. Juhi, a DaVita dietitian from California, grew up in England and has created an easy-to-make, kidney-friendly recipe of this traditional British meal that American’s will love.

Diet types:

  • CKD non-dialysis
  • Dialysis
  • Diabetes

Recipe submitted by DaVita renal dietitian Juhi from California.

Portions: 6     Serving size: 1/6 of pie

  • 1 medium onion
  • 3/4 cup carrots
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 2 large potatoes
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1-1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/3 cup tomato sauce
  • 3/4 cup frozen green peas
  • 1 cup nondairy creamer
  • 1/2 cup brown gravy

  1. Chop onion and carrots. Mince garlic cloves. Peel potatoes and cut into 1/2 inch pieces. Boil in a large pot of water  for 5 minutes. Drain water, replace with fresh water and boil again until potatoes are tender; drain.
  2. While potatoes are cooking, melt 2 tablespoons butter in a large frying pan. Over medium heat, sauté onions and garlic until tender (10 minutes).
  3. Add ground beef and sauté until no longer pink.
  4. Add pepper, Worcestershire sauce, tomato sauce and vegetables. Simmer on low heat, uncovered, for 10 minutes.
  5. Preheat oven to 400° F.
  6. Mash potatoes in a bowl with 2 tablespoons of butter. Mix in nondairy creamer to give potatoes a creamy consistency. Add pepper to taste.
  7. Spread beef evenly in a baking dish. Cover evenly with mash potatoes. Use a fork to make a design.
  8. Bake for 30 minutes until bubbly. To brown top, broil for 2 minutes if desired.
  9. Serve 2 tablespoons of gravy over each portion.

Renal and renal diabetic food choices

    • 3 meat
    • 1 starch
    • 1-1/2 vegetable, medium potassium
    • 3 fat

Carbohydrate choices

Helpful hints

  • Double boiling potatoes in a large pot of water reduces potassium content. Peel and cut potatoes into small pieces, cover with water and boil  5 minutes. Replace with fresh water and cook to desired consistency. Discard cooking water.
  • Freeze extra portions for a quick meal later.
  • The nutrient analysis includes gravy from a dry mix. Make low-sodium homemade gravy to reduce sodium content.

I dont know if I didnt use enoughpotatoes or changing to 1 percent milk made that much difference, but I had toadd more potatoes because 1 cup of milk made the potatoes soup. Otherwise good flavor will make again

Would using a mashed cauliflower (rather than leeched potatoes) lower potassium content? Dietitian comment: Yes the cauliflower is lower in potassium, even after the potatoes are leached.

Could you add the gravy before baking ? that would keep the meat moist and that is how I have cooked regular Sheppards Pie. What would be the differents ? Dietitian comment: Great suggestion!

I think this is too high in potassium for someone who is not on dialysis yet. CKD non-dialysis I use the Lower Protein one

This was an amazing recipe, However make sure you do not accidently make it with French vanilla Liquid Non Dairy Creamer. French Vanilla Shepards Pie was an interesting taste, however a normal taste would have been better.

Great recipe - my husband loves it...but did I miss something? My pie never gets "bubbly." When do you add the gravy - prior to baking, or on top after it's done? Moderator comment: Good catch on the gravy. We contacted Juhi who told us the gravy is to be served on top once the pie is plated. As for bubbly it may be bubbly depending on how long you cook it, but if it doesn't bubble when done don't worry.
