Café au Lait Protein Wake-Up

Everyone loves a cup of Joe in the morning. But now kidney patients can kick-start the day with something even better: Café au Lait Protein Wake-Up, a kidney-friendly hot beverage from renal dietitian Sue in from North Carolina.

Portions: 1     Serving size: 9 ounces


  • 1 scoop protein powder
  • 8 ounces hot coffee
  • 2 tablespoons flavored liquid coffee creamer


  1. Place 1 scoop protein powder in a coffee cup. Add coffee, and stir with a small wire whisk until dissolved.
  2. Add flavored coffee creamer.

Helpful hints

  • Add ice for Iced Café au Lait. Count in fluid allowance if you are limiting liquids.
  • Add additional sweetener of choice if desired.
  • Refrigerate leftover morning coffee to easily make this treat any time of the day.

What protein powder can they have? thought they could not have soy Dietitian comment: Whey protein is usually lower in phosphorus and potassium compared to soy protein powder, but there is a big difference between brands and ingredients. Check with your dietitian for a list of the most kidney-friendly protein powder choices.
