Chocolate Smoothie

Chocolate Smoothie is a creamy treat for people with diabetes who are on dialysis. It features egg whites, which can be a great substitute for other proteins. Try this delicious kidney-friendly recipe today.

Portions: 1     Serving size: 9 ounces


  • 1 tablespoon powered Bakers Cocoa, unsweetened
  • 1 tablespoon cold water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (or use sugar substitute for diabetics) 
  • 8 ounces pasteurized liquid egg white
  • 3 tablespoons nondairy frozen whipped topping


  1. Combine cocoa, cold water and sugar.
  2. Stir until sugar dissolves. 
  3. Add egg whites and whipped topping, mix until whipped topping melts completely.

Helpful hints

  • Diabetics can substitute Equal®, Splenda® or other sugar substitute if desired. Carbohydrate is reduced to 6 grams per serving if sugar substitute is used instead of sugar.

I don't understand, I was told no cocoa or chocolate Moderator comment: You can still stay within your targets for potassium and phosphorus and include small amounts of chocolate. In this recipe the 1 tablespoon of chocolate contributes 81 mg potassium and 39 mg phosphorus to the total recipe. Most of the potassium and sodium is from the pasteurized egg whites.

seems high in things i must be careful to limit - cocoa, sodium and potassium i am stage 4 pre-dialysis and hope to stay that way for 10 more years at best!!
