Apple Crisp

Serving size: 1/2 cup

Ingredients

  • 5 cups of sliced apples
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup plus 3 tablespoons white all-purpose flour (divided use)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon (divided use)
  • 1 cup oatmeal
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4  teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4  cup vegetable shortening

Preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 350° F. 
  2. Spray a 9" x 9" pan with nonstick cooking spray.
  3. Peel, core and slice apples.
  4. Combine 1 cup white sugar, 3 tablespoons flour and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Add sliced apples and toss to coat. 
  5. Pour apple mixture into prepared pan.
  6. Mix oatmeal, remaining 1 cup white flour, brown sugar, remaining 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, baking soda and baking powder. Cut butter and vegetable shortening into this mixture with a pastry blender or a fork. 
  7. Pour topping over apples.
  8. Bake for 1 hour.

Helpful Hints

  • 1 medium apple yields approximately 1 cup after peeled and cored.

I saw this recipe--I make apple crisp but use only brown sugar, butter, apples and flour and cinnamon. Eliminate the veg. shortening, baking powder, white sugar and baking soda. It's an old family recipe and tastes great--saving tons of sugar and the phosphates from the soda and baking powder--then you can eat more!! Give it a try.

This is really GOOD. However,1/2 cup is not realistic. And BTW, is it so goo served warm with either fat-free Cool Whip(tm) or sneek a little cream on top. I suppose rice milk would taste good with it, also.
