Is it possible to substitute fresh/frozen cherries for the canned pie filling? Dietitian comment: Yes, you can make your own cherry pie filling using either fresh or frozen cherries. You can use the My Recipes feature in DaVita Diet Helper to analyze and save your recipe.

Could I substitute butter flavor shortening for the unsalted butter in this recipe? Dietitian comment: Yes it will not change the outcome of the finished product but it will be higher in unhealthy trans-fats due to the shortening.

Tried this for my dad who's on dialysis, and it's delicious. My mom, who doesn't have kidney problems, now requests it every other week. Recently found an old family recipe for sour cream cherry cake, and this is almost identical. A must-try.

Just curious.. I looked up a cherry pie filling recipe and inputed it into my Master Cook and came out with a very high potassium amount (709 mg) per 32 ounce (1 quart), why is the canned so much lower. Dietitian comment: My program includes a generic cherry pie filling with 954 mg potassium and Solo brand with 929 mg for 32 ounces. The recipe only calls for 20 ounces (580-596 mg)which is divided between 24 portions, approximately 25 mg potassium per serving.

This is a simple but delicious recipe--great visual appeal too. Nice & moist! Only thing I needed to buy was the cherry filling.
