Sweet Cherry Cream Pie

DaVita dietitian, Kim from Missouri, helps her dialysis patients eat well and stay healthy with plenty of enthusiasm and mouthwatering recipes. Here’s your chance to give one of her kidney-friendly recipes a try. Kim shares her lip-smacking Sweet Cherry Cream Pie.

Portions: 8     Serving size: 1/8 slice of pie


    • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
    • 1 cup sugar
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • 1 cup  Cool Whip® frozen whipped topping, thawed
    • 1 graham cracker pie crust, 9" size
    • 20 ounces cherry pie filling


  1. In a large bowl, mix cream cheese, sugar or Splenda® and vanilla with a mixer.
  2. Add nondairy whipped topping and mix well.
  3. Pour mixture into graham cracker pie crust.
  4. Top with cherry pie filling. 
  5. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

    • 1 fruit, low potassium
    • 3 fat
    • 1-1/2 high calorie

Carbohydrate choices


Helpful hints

  • Substitute Splenda® No Calorie Sweetener and low-sugar pie filling to reduce calories to 294 and carbohydrate to 33 grams. Count as 2 carbohydrate choices.
  • Substitute low-fat cream cheese to reduce fat and calories.
  • For variation, use apple- or peach-pie filling instead of cherry.

Sounds like an easy recipe, however for those of us who hate canned cherries, we could use a fresher option. And, Splenda is a toxic substance that damages the liver and other organs, so anyone using Splenda is going to destroy her health!! With that in mind, I have to rate this low. Moderator comment: You could use an alternative sweetener of choice and frozen or fresh cherries but would require creating a sauce and cooling.
