In the plenty-hot days of summer, it’s nice to have a cool ‘n’ easy treat. If you haven’t tried a fruit smoothie yet, let this be the final nudge to get your blender a-buzzing. Choose your smoothie from Peach, Peach Pineapple, Strawberry or Strawberry Pineapple. These four exciting recipes are from the inspired kitchen of DaVita dietitian, Judy from Michigan.
Born in Colombia to American parents, Judy describes herself as well-traveled. She graduated from Loma Linda University, California, with a Bachelor of Science degree in dietetics after being encouraged by a mentor to change her major from home economics. After relocating to Michigan, the proud home of Kellogg’s cereals, Judy applied for a position in renal dietetics. That was seven years ago and the rest, as they say, is history.
“One of the most challenging aspects of my job is trying to get patients to take all their phosphorus binders when they eat, while still eating well and getting good nourishment. It’s difficult to see patients make what I would consider “bad” choices and remain non-judgmental. I realize they have the right to choose, which may mean going against professional advice,” admits Judy.
Judy says that the most rewarding part of her job is “educating patients about their conditions, and helping them get involved in their own care. I try to offer hope as a gift to help patients cope the best they can. I thoroughly enjoy seeing my patients do well. My particular approach tends to be as an educator rather than a police person. I try to provide enough information so they can make informed decisions about adhering to all or some aspects of treatment.” Judy says the most important things patients can do to improve health “is maintain a positive spirit and be active with it.”
The education and information that DaVita provides their dietitians is particularly helpful to Judy. “I appreciate the value the company places on the quality of care we give our patients. I like the support that helps our work be more efficient. “I am particularly grateful for the nice, new building and physical environment provided by the company.”
Judy’s recipes for fruit smoothies give you four frosty flavor choices: Peach, Strawberry, Peach Pineapple and Strawberry Pineapple. Fruit smoothies are cool, filling, nutritious and pack a high-protein punch.
