Texas native Melisa became interested in nutrition after taking an Introductory Nutrition class in her freshman year at the University of Texas at Austin (“Hook ‘em Horns!”). She credits her professor for helping her make her career choice and is glad she was pointed in the direction of dietetics. “I find it rewarding when I have patients who are always asking questions about their diets because they want to improve their nutrition,” she explains.
One of the challenging aspects of her Texas center is “working with a large Spanish-speaking population and always having or developing Spanish education materials,” says Melisa. Judging from the recipe she has given us, Melisa is up for the challenge.
Melisa has been with DaVita for the past three years. Her patients enjoy her positive attitude which helps brighten their day. Melisa also enjoys working with her patients and her team. She appreciates the spirit of fun that DaVita promotes. “This year our team decided to start singing a special birthday song to all our patients on their birthdays,” Melisa says. “We present them with a bouquet of balloons and a muffin with a candle for them to blow out. And a good time is had by all!”
