Lemon Berry Bread by Mindy from Indiana

Mindy advises her patients to “take one issue at a time. It is easier to tackle a problem in pieces and change that one thing and then move onto another.” Just the kind of advice you’d expect from an open and understanding dietitian who tries to constantly teach and remind her patients how to maintain good health.  Mindy recognizes the fact that she needs to treat “the whole patient,” and does so by taking as much time as she can with each and every person she sees. “A lot of times the patient may just want someone to talk to,” Mindy explains. She says she is rewarded for her effort every time she sees a patient’s hard work on a nutritional issue result in success.

An Indiana girl through and through, Mindy was born and raised in the northwestern section of the state. She graduated from Purdue University, and became a dietitian, “because I was intrigued with how eating right and certain nutrients can impact a person’s overall health,” she says. Although Mindy’s been with DaVita for only 10 months, she’s already an important part of her patients’ and team members’ lives. “We recently had a patient who lost everything in a house fire,” she says. “The teammates and patients really pulled together and collected clothes and other items that the family could use. I think things like that show that we care about our patients and our fellow teammates.” This kind of constant support is one of the many reasons Mindy enjoys working at DaVita.

And the patients appreciate Mindy, her teammates and their creative ways of sharing information. One example is the displays they put up in the waiting room at their Indiana center. “I have had a lot of patients and family members comment on something they saw in the waiting room,” Mindy notes. With so much information to pass along to their patients, one of the team’s biggest challenges is finding the space in the waiting room to share as much material as possible.
