Helpful hints

  • Nutritional yeast is deactivated yeast. It has a strong nutty or cheesy flavor and is used as a cheese substitute in recipes such as Dairy-free Cheesy Sauce.
  • For a little heat add chili powder.
  • The turmeric is added for color. You can adjust the amount for the desired color.
  • Sauce will maintain same thickness unless additional heat or liquid is added. For a thicker, spreadable sauce reduce the water to 1/2 cup. If over thickened whisk in a small amount of water.

This recipe did not turn out at all like I expected. Sauce was to thick, and the Turmeric was overpowering. I used Nutritional Yeast flakes from my local health food store.

I would like to know what foods my husband can have that are non dairy and no phosphrus. Dietitian comment: You've come to the right place! We have over 800 recipes that are low in phosphorus. Many of those are also dairy free.

We found it to be very thick and not at all cheesy. Will not try it again.

Found the nutritional yeast in bulk and box at Jimbo's. If you have one in your area you can try that too.

where to you find the traditional yeast? Dietitian comment: Whole Foods carries it. Look in the bulk food section. You can also order it online. Bob's Red Mill and Bragg are two popular brand names.

I use non-dairy cheese substitute instead of this. It is found in the produce section @ my Tops market. & it has a really good taste & several flavors!! Dietitian comment: Be sure to check labels for the sodium content and avoid products with phosphate additives.
