New Mexico — After more than three decades with diabetes, Oscar has experienced many of the downsides of the disease, most notably kidney failure and thyroid disease. Oscar had been on conventional hemodialysis since 2000 at the DaVita Santa Fe Dialysis Center, and six months ago, he took the advice of his physician to look into the advantages of DaVita’s in-center nocturnal dialysis program.
“If I can do anything to help myself, why not?” he says.
Oscar, who is one of the top salespeople for Riverside-based print company HDS, never let his kidney disease affect his productivity at work. However, before he started nocturnal dialysis treatments Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights, Oscar had to carve out 12 hours from his work week for hemodialysis.
“I’ve been with the company 33 years, and they were very flexible,” he says. “As a sales rep, I can make my own schedule. But doing conventional dialysis for four hours, three times a week was tough; I always felt drained from the procedure.”
With DaVita’s nocturnal dialysis treatment, everything has changed for Oscar. He gets home from nocturnal dialysis around 3:00 a.m., goes to sleep quickly, wakes at 8:00 a.m. and, in his words, is “ready to roll.” Oscar, who is awaiting a kidney transplant, appreciates the benefits of less stress on his heart and the better cleaning of his blood that the nocturnal dialysis treatments provide. Additionally, as a weekend bass player for a number of entertainers, Oscar is thankful for DaVita’s flexible nocturnal scheduling.
“The staff at the dialysis center really works to accommodate my schedule,” he says. “All the technicians and nurses are professional and treat me well. Thanks to the nocturnal dialysis treatments, I’m much more productive,” states Oscar.
