Apple crisps, is this like a potato chip or is it for making pie. How is it that pretzels are allowed, aren’t they high in sodium? Aren’t the cereals high in sugar for a diabetic? Just learning about all this new eating style. Thanks. Dietitian comment: The Pretzel Crisps contribute 83 mg sodium to a serving. You could substitute unsalted pretzel twists. The helpful hints suggest decreasing the serving size to 1/2 cup for a lower carbohydrate serving. Also, you can check out the other snack mix recipes on the site. Some of these are lower in carbs.

From what I've read re: kidney safe recipes, this seems like a misprint. What am I missing? Sugary cereal, carbohydrates, salted pretzels, lots of butter, maple syrup and sugar fruit? I'm new at this but this just doesn't seem right. I appreciate your help! Dietitian comment: Compared to similar commercially prepared snack mixes this recipe is lower in sodium. The helpful hint for people with diabetes is to reduce the serving to 1/2 cup.

What I'm looking for is a list of "Eat This" or "Don't Eat This" for Stage 4 CKD patients. Does this exist? Dietitian comment: We do not have a list on the website but there is an article "Stage 4 CKD: Focusing on Nutrition" that has some eat and limit foods. https://www.davita.com/diet-nutrition/articles/advice/stage-4-kidney-disease-diet-focusing-on-nutrition. Also the Kidney Diet Tips blog has a post "Late Stage Kidney Disease Eating Tips" https://blogs.davita.com/kidney-diet-tips/late-stage-kidney-disease-eating-tips/ .

Can't wait to try it! Can I use animal crackers instead of teddy grahams or will they be too big? Dietitian comment: The animal crackers will work. Plus the sodium, potassium and phosphorus will be slightly lower.

Although I am too old to walk down those trails anymore, I still love this trail mix. The trail mix is a mix of good ingredients. Sarah makes it for me. She is my wife and she likes it too. Thank you - Mathias

Sounds good - very much like something my Mom made back in the sixties -BUT I'm just wondering how this could possibly make 24 - 1 cup servings???? appears to be about 11-12 cups of ingredients?????? Is the serving size correct???? Dietitian comment: I have not made this in a while but thinking it is the volume from the apple chips. pretzel crisps and teddy grahams that add the additional cups.

Wouldn't 47 grams of carbs and 22 grams of sugar/daily snack be too high for a CKD and diabetic? My husband who is both thinks this is high. Dietitian comment: In the helpful hints there is a suggestion to reduce the portion to 1/2 cup if you have diabetes. This limits the carbohydrate to 24 grams. You could omit the honey and syrup and add a sugar-free sweetener to lower carbs even further.

Can unsalted margarine and unsalted butter be used in your recipes interchangeably? Dietitian comment: Yes--use the product you prefer. If the recipe calls for unsalted do nut substitute with regular margarine or butter because the sodium content will be much higher.

Fantastic recipe! It's a big recipe but it's great to stow away in an air tight container for snacking throughout the week. Is it possible to find out the grams of sugar per serving? Dietitian comment: Yes the total carbs for a 1 cup portion is 47 g and the sugar is 22 g.

My family and I loved it! Next time we'll just omit the apple chips. It doesn't really need it.

Excellent. I cut the recipe in half since the recipe above makes too much for me. To solve the burning issue, I cooked all of mine on a big sheet lined with foil. Turn the over down to 275 degrees and increase the total baking time from 20 minutes to 30, stirring halfway through. You can add the fruit the last 5 minutes or so. I had absolutely no trouble with any burning or scorching due to the lower baking temperature.

I made this tonight very delicious I was going to bag a cup of it in small sandwich bags for each patient at dialysis but my family got to it first. I found the apple chips at Walmart where the raisins are there was nothing in the produce aisle however I believe I've seen the apple chips at HyVee in the produce aisle I will have to check next time. I also broke up each apple piece into 3 pieces I think next time I will add more apple and cranberry since I love fruit.

thank you for this great recipe! I am looking forward to making it for a Thanksgiving treat. I live with several people who are diabetics, but I am the only one on dialysis. This will surely go over very well. Now I want to check out other recipes also. Helen in California Oh, yes, some ovens are hotter than others. Also there is a recommendation to do one tray at a time. That might take care of the burning issue.

Couldn't find apple chips, even without them this is a yummy snack! Moderator comment: Look in the produce section--sometimes the apple chips are found there instead of the chip isle.

Agree with jstenske682; this started smoking after about 10 minutes, and burned the pan that was last out. I just added the apples and craisens and din't put it back in the oven.

I have made this recipe quite a few time. Excellent recipe. My family loves it too. The only problem I have had is it seems to burn easily. I have had to shorten the baking time up and lower the temperature of the oven.
