Prolific author and renowned authority on kidney disease, Allen R. Nissenson, MD, FACP is chief medical officer of DaVita Kidney Care and emeritus professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, where he has served as director of the dialysis program and associate dean. Dr. Nissenson is the chair of Kidney Care Partners and co-chair of the Kidney Care Quality Alliance. He is a former president of the Renal Physicians Association (RPA) and current member of the Government Affairs Committee.

Dr. Nissenson also previously served as president of the Southern California End-Stage Renal Disease Network, as well as chair of the Medical Review Board. He has authored over 700 publications in the field of nephrology, dialysis, anemia management, and health care delivery and policy. He is the editor of two dialysis textbooks, one in its fourth edition and one released in its fifth edition (2017). One of the founders of RMS Disease Management Inc. (now DaVita VillageHealth) and RMS Lifeline Inc. (now DaVita Lifeline Vascular Access), Dr. Nissenson continues to work on the development of new models of integrated care management for the chronically ill. He served as a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow of the Institute of Medicine from 1994-1995 and worked in the office of the late Senator Paul Wellstone. Dr. Nissenson earned his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School and is the recipient of various awards, including the President’s Award of the National Kidney Foundation, the Lifetime Achievement Award in Hemodialysis, the American Association of Kidney Patients’ (AAKP) Medal of Excellence Award and in 2017, the RPA Distinguished Nephrology Service Award.
