Helpful hints

  • Double boiling potatoes in a large pot of water reduces potassium content. Peel and cut potatoes into small pieces, cover with water and boil  5 minutes. Replace with fresh water and cook to desired consistency. Discard cooking water.
  • Freeze extra portions for a quick meal later.
  • This lower protein version of Easy Sheperd's Pie has a reduced amount of ground beef compared to the original recipe on DaVita.com. The nutrients have been adjusted to reflect this change.

This was ok or "edible" as my husband said. Even with the gravy, it was dry. I made it exactly as written except for less milk in the potatoes. I was adding a little at a time and they were getting soupy. I grew up eating Shepherds Pie and I've made it myself many times. This is a good rendition for our diet needs but next time, I may separate the ground beef after it browns and make a small casserole for me and one for my husband.

My hubby loved this..the only change I would make is cut back on the butter slightly. I forgot to make the gravy so will have to try to remember next time!

I've made this and will again soon. I just have one question; why is this recipe listed twice in the list of recipes? Dietitian comment: One version is lower in protein than the other.

Another great recipe. My husband and I both liked it a lot. Simple and tasty. The gravy gives it a special touch. Will definitely make this Easy Shepherd's Pie again.

Isn't this kind of high in potassium? Dietitian comment: Not for a one dish meal. A low potassium diet is 2000-3000 mg/day. If you have 3 meals and a snack plan on 600-800 mg potassium per meal and 200 -400 mg for snack.

This was good & will definitely do it again. My Irish heritage says to drop the tomato sauce & use half the prepared gravy in the meat mixture just before putting in the casserole dish. I would probably pre-cook the carrots & not simmer as long. To each his own I guess.

Excellent recipe! Used ground turkey instead of beef. The gravy really adds a special touch. Will have this often. I baked it in an 11x7 pan. Fit just perfect.

Can u sub evaporated milk for any recipe that uses non dairy creamer? I will be using mashed cauliflower for the potatoes. Thanks Dietitian comment: No the evaporated milk has much more potassium and phosphorus. Try rice milk or almond milk instead.

I made this for supper, it as delicious. I soaked the potatoes for 6 hrs, changing water twice. I think over cook the potatoes, they were very sticky to work with.
