Why do I have to put Splenda instead of real sugar? Our Nephrologist said Splenda /other fake sugars are very bad for ckd. Perhaps only for diabetic? Also about protein powder? What about dairy free? We can have rice or almond milk, could we substitute? Dietitian comment: You may substitute sugar or desired sweetener for Splenda. If you use rice or almond milk substitute for the apple juice. Both milks are still low in protein but you can omit the protein powder if you want a lower protein beverage.

Could some one put a name to the protein powder or brand kind? Dietitian comment: Whey protein is usually lower in phosphorus and potassium compared to soy protein. Some of the brands used in other recipes include EAS 100% whey protein powder, Procel, Prosource, and Resource Beneprotein. Always read the label for nutrients as manufacturers change product formulas and this can impact the nutrients.

I just made this & I cannot have milk so I didn't use milk & I feel it is too sweet & I only used 4 packets of sweenter. I also used frozen blueberries & sugarless Apple juice. My phosphorus tends to run high so I shouldn't even had this but I'm tired of drinking the same liquids & need to put more liquids in my diet. Thanks

This sounds like a tasty smoothie. I don't feel the need of sweetner but I wonder about adding rice dream and elminating the ice cubes. How would this change it. Moderator Comment: Sounds like it will work, but suggest cutting the apple juice down to 1 cup if you want to keep carbs similar.

I thought this recipe was a good option for a protein drink. I used vanilla protein powder to help with the flavor. I also think this recipe is versitile enough that you could do strawberry or another flavor pretty easily.

Thanks Moderator: Splenda is a low calorie sugar substitute widely available in the US. You can use other sugar substitutes instead. You may need to adjust the quantity based on the sweetening power of the substitute you use.

I like this reciepe but I make mine with sugar and without the protein powder. I am allergic to artifical sweetners so sugar is the only one I use. It's not so sweet made with 3 teaspoons sugar
