With her passion for food and nutrition, it was to be expected that Deb, a dietitian at two DaVita centers, would choose this field of specialization as a career.
Deb, who hails from Illinois, completed her dietetics internship and master’s degree at Northern Illinois University. She joined DaVita in 2003. Deb stated, “I find that at DaVita, the role of the dietitian as an integral part of the health care team is recognized and respected.”
Being away from the hustle-bustle of the city by working in relaxed rural surroundings is something Deb enjoys. Her new center opened in September 2004 and the other unit was expanded and renovated in March 2003 making it more pleasant for patients as well as team members. “The most special part of my work at both centers are the patients who dialyze there and the teammates who take care of them,” Deb said.
With Deb, it all comes down to working with her patients and teaching them how to help themselves. “If there is one thing I can do to make a difference in my patients’ lives, it is to educate them about their dialysis diet to improve or maintain their health, Deb said, adding, “I do this by providing patients and their families with renal nutrition education.”
In June 2004, Deb began providing Medical Nutrition Therapy at DaVitaCare. DaVitaCare is a new program providing comprehensive services to chronic kidney disease patients who have not yet started dialysis.
When it comes to challenges, Deb is quick to focus on one she considers the most important. “I find the most challenging part of my work is to motivate patients to take care of their health by following their renal diet,” she said. When asked about the most rewarding aspect of her job, Deb just as quickly responded, “The best part is seeing the improvement in my patients’ lab values.”
Here’s a yummy recipe from Deb that’s not too challenging and definitely rewarding. Cool ‘n’ Crunchy Chicken Salad is great alone, over a bed of lettuce or in a sandwich. It makes a quick lunch or dinner and is very satisfying.
