There is something very special about DaVita dietitians. For Helen, it is clearly her friendly, understanding and personal approach to working with home dialysis patients. “I get to know them and their families,” Helen shares. “I let them know that I care about them as a person—not as a diet order or a patient.”

Perhaps it’s Helen’s southern roots that make her so friendly and caring. After all, she grew up in Mississippi where she received a bachelor’s of science from the University of Mississippi and then went on to get her master’s degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. 

Today, more than 10 years after moving to Colorado and joining DaVita, she thrives on direct patient care and improving albumin (a form of protein in the blood that is a measure of good nutrition in people on dialysis) in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients by meeting the requirements for more dialysis to improve their lab results. Helen adds, “I also love to see a light bulb come on during instruction when patients realize that the diet is not awful and it is doable.”

Helen enjoys her work at DaVita. Besides helping patients, her center is located in beautiful Colorado, which offers much to be grateful for: the climate, mountains, skiing, hiking and biking, but most important—a wonderful team of DaVita teammates. “We are a very small team—only seven in number. We complement each other and work together on all levels to make sure the patients get the best care,” says Helen.
