DaVita dietitian Nancy from Virginia previously contributed her recipe for Pumpkin Bread. She continues to share kidney-friendly recipes not only with her patients at dialysis, but also with her community. When asked to find a recipe for her local Meals on Wheels program to use for patient protein education, Nancy stepped up to the challenge. She collaborated with her church, where volunteers were doing the breakfast rotation for the program. Nancy explains, “I chose the recipe for an egg casserole. I enjoyed modifying the original recipe to make it renal friendly for kidney patients."
During her years growing up in Pennsylvania, Nancy’s desire to work in the health care field led her to Penn State where she received a bachelor’s of science degree in medical dietetics. From there, she went on to work as a clinical dietitian and soon after joined the renal field. “During my first year of working as a clinical dietitian,” Nancy recalls, “I contracted with an out-patient dialysis center to work on weekends. I enjoyed doing this for two years and then went full-time with the company and worked with three facilities.” Three years later, Nancy went on to receive her masters degree in Public Health Nutrition and afterwards continued to work with kidney patients in both the hospital and public health settings.
Nancy has been with DaVita five years and currently works in three different clinics. Nancy enjoys DaVita’s “all for one and one for all” approach to clinic management, in addition to the most important part of her job—her patients. “For me, the most rewarding aspect is getting to know each and every one of my patients,” she shares. “I help them with managing their diets and health. Then I follow up with them weekly to reinforce any changes made and answer their questions.”
Nancy says that the single most important thing patients can do to improve their health is follow the advice of their physician and their dietitian. Patients also have great tips on new products and recipes.
