Elaine from Texas decided she wanted to be a dietitian in high school. “I went on a mission trip to a Guatemala orphanage where they fed the children beans and rice three times per day and chicken twice a week. They did this so the children could get enough complete protein, and I've been fascinated with nutrition ever since,” shares Elaine.
After completing her undergraduate degree at University of Texas at Austin, Elaine went on to Texas Woman’s University for graduate school and worked at a dialysis unit right out of school. “I found I really enjoyed working in the renal field,” states Elaine.
It is rewarding for Elaine to see positive changes in her dialysis patients’ health. She regularly encourages her patients to be their own advocates for their health by asking questions and taking control of their renal diet, taking their medications as prescribed and showing up for scheduled dialysis treatments. Elaine says she’s found that working with dialysis patients is most effective when she, “listens to where they are, never judges and is creative with finding dietary solutions.”
