DaVita renal dietitian Karla from Kansas is a native of the state and attended Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. She enjoys working at two small DaVita centers in Southeast Kansas with her wonderful patients.
Karla was drawn to the renal field because, as she says, “There are so many parts of one’s body and lifestyle that are affected by adequate kidney function. It’s interesting to see how these all work together and to try to help people make the best choices for their lives.” It’s no wonder that the most rewarding aspect or Karla’s job is, “seeing people make good choices and really feel better.”
In addition to counseling her patients on food choices, portion control, phosphorus control how to get adequate protein and other topics of importance, Karla appreciates the opportunity to form relationships with her patients. “I enjoy getting to know our patients well because we see them so often. Similarly to a family, we get to help work through patients’ problems with them and celebrate their successes,” shares Karla.
When asked what she thinks arethe most important things patients can do to improve their health, Karla says, ”Make a plan and be proactive in your health care, take a few minutes each day to read something about your health, schedule meals, make a grocery list, plan to exercise and be intentional about your decisions.”
Karla encourages patients to use their crock pots for cooking because, “It’s so exciting to come home to a meal that’s waiting on you.” After enjoying a renal-friendly meal, try one of Karla’s delicious cake recipes.
