Jonathan — In-Center Nocturnal Patient

California — Ask Jonathan what he thinks about his dialysis center opening up a nocturnal program and he replies, “Thank you. I love it!”

Jonathan’s kidney failure happened seven years ago. He had a transplant that lasted three years, and now he is back on hemodialysis until another kidney becomes available. Jonathan said he chose nocturnal dialysis for health reasons. “My sister is a nurse,” Jonathan shares, adding, “She did all the research and told me this treatment is better on the heart and people live a longer life.”

“This is my second week of nocturnal dialysis,” says the 6'3" man reclining in the dialysis chair with an additional stool under his feet. “I have more energy. I even painted my kitchen today. And, I have an appetite for the first time in so long — I haven’t had an appetite in forever.” With the longer dialysis sessions, Jonathan says he also enjoys having a little more fluids.

Nocturnal dialysis has provided both lifestyle and health benefits for Jonathan in only two weeks. “I have my days free, my energy is up and my quality of life has shot up. My blood pressure has gone down — it’s actually normal now — my doctor was thrilled. He knocked off one dose of my blood pressure medicines.”

Jonathan’s new dialysis schedule is easy for him to follow. “I get her about 8:30 p.m. and get on around 9:00 p.m. At about 11:00 p.m. the lights go down and I sleep here. Between 5:30 a.m. or 6:00 a.m., I’m on my way home. This is perfect for my lifestyle.”

“I like to be active during the days, but I would have cramps so bad I would go home after dialysis and go to bed. I used to do the first morning shift and would get home around 8:30 a.m. and sleep until 1:30 p.m. The long nap wasted half my day,” Jonathan explains. “After my first nocturnal session, I went home and washed and waxed my car — I saved myself 35 bucks,” he laughs. Jonathan is also planning on going back to school to be an x-ray technician. After a career in banking he would like to get into the medical field.

While Jonathan waits for another kidney transplant, he is excited to have the in-center nocturnal hemodialysis program offered at his center. According to Jonathan, “The benefits for me are phenomenal. It fits my lifestyle perfectly. I have my days now to spend with my friends and family. I walked four miles yesterday. I now can take my dogs out for a walk everyday. I can even take them for two walks. If you have a spouse or kids at home you’d be crazy not to do this. This is a great program.”
