Helpful hints

  • To reduce sodium further, use unsalted margarine or unsalted butter. Select the rice and corn cereal brand lowest in sodium.
  • For an added holiday twist, add 1 cup dried cranberries to the snack mix after it has cooled.

Is the Parmesan cheese the grated kind that comes in a plastic container, or do you use fresh shredded Parmesan cheese? Dietitian comment: You can use the shelf-stable grated cheese or you can use refrigerated grated cheese.

Instead of using Parmesan cheese could I use a small amount of worchestire sauce a couple dashes and no popcorn? Dietitian comment: Yes this change is acceptable. Look for the reduced sodium Worcestershire sauce.

I've never seen unsalted pretzels in the store. Can they be ordered online? What stores did you find them in? Walmart? Dietitian comment: You can order them online or request your store to stock them. The bran i most often find is Snyders of Hanover. Newman's Own also makes unsalted pretzels.

A teammate made this for a party and it was good. She felt it didn't have a lot of flavor but no one complained and it was all gone by the end of the day.

I am a dietitian at DaVita and I made this for our "super bowl party" at the facility as an alternative to the typical party mix with all the salt - Had some great comments from those that tried it. Great addition with the cranberries. I agree about the butter, cut it in 1/2 with the second batch that I made and that worked out better.

I am a dietitian with Davita. I made this for my patients and they thought it was pretty good. Butter and cheese makes it greasy though.
